Repair & Restoration
In most Oriental rugs the first thing
things that go first are the sides &
edge of the rug as they get most of the
traffic.
We match the worn spots from over
200 colors of wool & cotton.
If we do not have the exact colors we
dye it with all natural dyes.
In the more complicated areas, like
the field of the rugs, we have to do an
actual reweave which is complicated
but well worth it to save a fine carpet.
Cleaning Rugs by Hand
The first thing we do is test a small
area to make sure there will be no
color run. We start with cold water
and gradually increase the
temperature. Both sides of the piece
are then thoughly vacuumed.
Pet stains are the most difficult to get
out and you have to be very careful
when cleaning to remove them.
Once this is done we immerse the rug
in warm water and scrub it with
organic solvents. I like to treat the
rugs for moth proofing with a special
mixture I learned in Central Asia.
Then the rugs are hung in a hot room
for 2 days until they’re dry. Then the
rug is gently vacuumed on both sides
& the final process to leave them
outside in the fresh air for one day.
Furniture & Pillows
Sometimes it’s impossible to fix a
rug. I try to recycle the fragments and
the easiest way Is to make pillows.
I also enjoy taking vintage & antique
frames of furniture & using the
fragments for seats, cushions and
pillows.
I feel that I am passing this furniture
onto the next generation & keeping
some of its history. Each piece Is one
of a kind.
